Geeky Stuff = Я́ндекс Yandex’s New Front Page

8:07 pm in Cool Web Sites, Geeky stuff by aindreas

Yandex has unveiled a new front page design. The new layout offers more space for personalization – users can add more widgets with all other gadgets grouped for a faster and easier access.. and it has yellow bits. I must say I like clean search front pages. I digress.. ‘Now, the space right under the search bar offers all Yandex users an opportunity to view their local information, such as current time, weather, maps, train and plane times.

Every user can now choose what information they would like to see on Yandex’ front page and fill the vacant space on yandex.ru with their favorite widgets.
Although, as a rule, tweaking settings is not very popular among Yandex users, widgets proved to be a success. More than 10% of all Yandex users install widgets on Yandex’s front page. The most popular are news, jobs and sales widgets. So, in Saint Petersburg the most popular is LiveJournal’s «Otdam Darom» (Stuff for Free) widget, while the web users in Novosibirsk prefer «Jobs in Novosibirsk».

Geeky Stuff = Я́ндекс Yandex People’s Map

6:29 pm in Geeky stuff, Gossip by aindreas

pic above Yandex foki map photo

Yandex may be about to allow its users an opportunity to collaborate on People’s Map. Whereby you can create and maintain a map of your hometown or any other familiar place. Linked to the Russian equivalent of google (in russian) >>> Yandex.

In addition to drawing features like buildings, roads, points of interest, rivers and forests over satellite images, contributors can change or add more information to the objects that already exist on the map. For example, they can correct an inaccurately mapped building or give a street its name if it was missing.

So I’m guessing you could take say, Dublin or Smallville and add bits and bobs as you know exist and voilà you have a home-made sociable map.

Anyhow, it may happen, I have no idea if it will. It’s a good idea.

Yandex (Russian: Я́ндекс) is a Russian search engine, the world’s second largest non-English-language web portal, and the largest Russian-language web portal. And it’s impressive. Yandex has some interesting stuff going on.

November 9, 2009, Yandex have released more detail on it’s maps.

Multimedia Information on Yandex.Maps

Yandex users can view localised sculptures, birds and animals, along with the possibility to watch videos from all over the world and more. Now, Yandex Maps can show not only say, the Taganskaya street in Moscow, but also a monument  such as a stool right next to building 13 on this street.
The new map layers were built based on API Yandex.Maps using the information obtained from the project partners. For example, these include color photographs from the 20th century by Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky. While photographs of other monuments were provided by the users of Yandex.Fotki, the company’s free photo hosting service.
In addition, for many cities in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, Yandex.Maps displays information from regional websites – so, web users in Novosibirsk can see Wi-Fi hotspots, gas and service stations in this city, and people in Vladimir can see local hotels, restaurants and cafes on Yandex.Maps. Besides finding a location of a certain facility, web users can also have access to other information, like telephone numbers or working hours.
